Review: Hampton Inn, Winnie Texas
Upon arriving at the property, the first impression was disappointing. The landscaping was overgrown and poorly maintained, and cigarette butts were scattered across the front walkway. The lobby felt dark and uninviting, with no music playing and a worn, tattered sign on the front desk reading, “Sorry for the inconvenience. Front desk clerk will be back in a minute.”
While I waited, two guests who appeared to be regulars arrived and casually remarked that they were surprised the clerk wasn’t asleep—adding that they often found him napping at a table in the breakfast area. This hardly instilled confidence.
After approximately eight minutes, the young front desk clerk finally appeared. He wore no name tag and was dressed in a t-shirt and blue jeans. He was evidently training a new employee who was dressed similarly in jeans and a sweatshirt—again, with no uniform or name tag. Although he told the trainee I was a Diamond member and handed me two bottles of water, he never personally acknowledged my status, nor did he ever make eye contact throughout the interaction.
In the elevator lobby, a missing light fixture exposed the base where the chandelier once hung. Reaching the third floor, I found the ice machine out of order, marked with a large printed sign. The hallways were noticeably worn and clearly in need of renovation.
Inside the room, the carpet had not been thoroughly vacuumed and showed significant wear—though the dark brown color did an effective job of hiding most of the dirt. The sofa and occasional chair were also heavily worn and overdue for replacement. The bed featured the latest Hampton linen package; however, it had been sloppily made, with the duvet cover simply tossed across the top. The pillows were flat and uninviting, the pillowcases appeared used, and the bed skirt was extremely wrinkled and crooked. Overall, there was no attention to detail.
The bathroom was perhaps the most troubling part of the stay. Although it smelled strongly of bleach, the cleanliness did not match the scent. The grout looked as though it had not been properly cleaned since the hotel opened more than 15 years ago. The bathtub had visible dirt and mildew in the corners, and the bathroom floor was littered with debris.
Breakfast the following morning was adequately stocked with the standard offerings, though there was no hot cocoa available for coffee. The breakfast attendant, like the front desk staff, was not in uniform and wore no name tag. At no point did they make eye contact or greet me as they tended to the area.

This Hampton Inn is significantly below brand standards and appears to be operated by individuals who lack attention to detail and genuine care for the guest experience. Until major improvements are made, the best advice for travelers is simple: keep driving.
