Mobile, my home town, was founded as the capital of colonial French Louisiana in 1702 and remained part of New France for over 60 years. During 1720, when France warred with Spain, Mobile was on the battlefront, so the capital moved west to Biloxi. In 1763, Britain took control of the colony following their victory in the Seven Years War. Following the American Revolutionary War, Mobile did not become a part of the United States, as it was part of territory captured by Spain from Great Britain in 1780.

Mardi Gras started in Mobile and is alive and well today. Carnival is from the Latin carnival, loosely translated as “Farewell to flesh.”  It dates back to ancient Egypt and later spread to Greece, Rome, France, and England. Mardi Gras; which is French for “Fat Tuesday”, ends at midnight on the last day of the carnival season.  This is 40 days before Easter, which is, the first Sunday after the first full moon, after the beginning of spring.  Therefore, it changes every year. The French brought a form of Mardi Gras to Mobile on March 3, 1699.  In 1711, a form of Mardi Gras called “Boeuf Gras”; which was a fatted bull symbolic of the last meat eaten before the Lenten Feast, was paraded through the streets.  Once a live version… now made of papier-mâché.

Hampton Inn Downtown Historic Area | Mobile, AL

King Bed RoomThis is a great little hotel with a wonderful staff. As I drive up to the hotel I did notice that the security gate was broken and some trash on the sidewalk leading to the door but before I could the hotel there was a staff member picking up the trash and empting out the garbage can. As I entered I found the lobby to be spotless, warm and welcoming.

Quality Inn Downtown (Downtown Mobile)Quality Inn-Downtown-Historic-District-photos-Room

This hotel originally built as a Holiday Inn is a value due to price. It is an exterior corridor hotel but has great wrought iron details and oversized windows. The check in was adequate but the desk staff know less about the history of this town than I know.
