Georgia has had five capitals in its history. The first being Savannah, the seat of government during British colonial rule, followed by Augusta, Louisville, Milledgeville, and Atlanta. The move to Atlanta was in 1868 and remains the capital to present day. The state legislature has gathered for official meetings in other places, most often in Macon and especially during the American Civil War.
